Should I color my hair dark on my own and then go to the salon and get highlights?

I don't wanna spend that much money on my hair and I just want a cut and color. But as I see it does cost alot. So I was thinking bout dying my hair at home with dark brown hair dye and then going to the salon maybe the next day or after and asking for highlights. no, I do this all the time. I keep my base shade of med. golden blonde and go to the salon for highlights and haircut. In between I touch up the roots only with my med. golden blonde. I usually go to the salon for highlights, three times a year. More visits for haircuts alone.
